It was a life-changing experience and the most challenging one I've ever experienced. The first three months were the toughest because nothing was familiar. But I was not alone. In the middle of all of that, we all made friends. My most favorite part about attending UWC was learning and experiencing different cultures, as well as sharing my cultures and traditions with others.

I learned to embrace and celebrate my differences, my loudness, my clumsiness and sometimes my awkwardness. I learned to enjoy the world around me as well as learning from it.

How would you describe your experience at the UWC school you attended?
ឧបសគ្គ: ឧបសគ្គជាច្រើនរួមមាន ការប្រើប្រាស់ភាសាទំនាក់ទំនង នឹកផ្ទះ ភាពមិនមានជំនឿលើខ្លួនឯង ភាពភ្ញាក់ផ្អើលនឹងវប្បធម៌ដទៃ អាហារ អត្តសញ្ញាណ ទំនាស់ក្នុងខ្លួន។ល។ ទោះជាយ៉ាងណាក៏ដោយ ខ្ញុំបានរៀនជំនៈលើឧបសគ្គទាំងនោះ ហើយបានរកឃើញនូវបទពិសោធន៍វិជ្ជមានជាច្រើនក្នុងរយៈពេល ២ ឆ្នាំបន្ទាប់។

Challenging: The challenges include but are not limited to the language barrier, homesickness, insecurity, culture shocks, foods, identity crisis, self-conflict, etc. However, I have learned to limit/overcome these and found myself in a more positive experience later on during the two years.
Self-discovery: I learned that all the challenges had allowed me to discover different strengths and weaknesses that I had posed and also how to increase the strengths and improve the weaknesses.
Fun & Joy: The fun and joy that I had at UWC outweighed all the aforementioned challenges. My friend and I had so much fun and many good memories that we would never forget in our lifetime. Together, we learned, attended social services, and spent fun time with each other. We watched many movies, played many board games, and had great parties. We cooked foods from around the world, went on overnight expeditions, sang and performed in a bonfire, danced to a mix of world music, or just simply talked all night.

What did you learn about yourself and the world around you during and after UWC?

ទោះបីជាពួកយើងមកពីប្រទេស និងមានប្រវត្តិ និងបទពិសោធន៍ជីវិតផ្សេងៗគ្នាក៏ដោយ ខ្ញុំយល់ឃើញថាសិស្សរួមសាលាដែលទទួលរងនូវការលំបាកស្រដៀងៗគ្នានោះគឺភាគច្រើនជាសិស្សដែលមកពីប្រទេសដែលបានឆ្លងកាត់នូវសង្គ្រាម អំពើពុករលួយ អំពើផ្តាច់ការ ភាពអយុត្តិធម៌ មានបញ្ហាយេនឌ័រ ការជ្រៀតជ្រែកពីប្រទេសខាងក្រៅ អំពើហិង្សាក្នុងគ្រួសារ ។ល។ ទោះជាយ៉ាងណាក៏ដោយ ពួកយើងក៏នៅតែបានចែករំលែកពីសេចក្តីស្រឡាញ់នៃវប្បធម៌ ប្រទេសជាតិរបស់យើង និងសេចក្តីស្រឡាញ់ចំពោះពិភពលោកដែលពោរពេញដោយសន្តិភាពនិងការរួបរួមគ្នា។

ខ្ញុំមានអារម្មណ៍ថាមានទំនួលខុសត្រូវក្នុងនាមជាពលរដ្ឋពិភពលោកក្នុងការតស៊ូដើម្បីជនទន់ខ្សោយ និងជនងាយរងគ្រោះ មិនត្រឹមតែនៅក្នុងសហគមន៍និងប្រទេសរបស់ខ្ញុំប៉ុណ្ណោះទេ ប៉ុន្តែនៅគ្រប់ទីកន្លែងក្នុងពិភពលោក។ ខ្ញុំបានរកឃើញថាខ្លួនខ្ញុំយកចិត្តទុកដាក់កាន់តែច្រើន និងកាន់តែសកម្មអំពីបញ្ហាសកលជុំវិញពិភពលោក ដែលខ្ញុំមិនដែលគិតថាខ្ញុំនឹងយល់និងដឹងថាខ្ញុំអាចធ្វើអ្វីបានអំពីបញ្ហានេះ។
- During UWC:
Despite coming from different backgrounds, life experiences, and unique stories, I found many fellow UWC students who share similar struggles including living in a country that was affected by wars, corruptions, dictatorships, injustice, gender inequality, wealth inequality, foreign invasion, domestic violence, etc. However, we also share a similar love of our culture, country, and a world that is full of peace and harmony.
I found out quite early how little I knew about different cultures, societies, and the world as a whole and how lucky I was to be exposed to all these experiences. For instance, one of the most embarrassing and ignorant things that I did my first year at UWC (2006), and I wished someone would set me straight, was making a joke by teasing a male friend of mine as “gay”. At the time, despite any intention of hurting or ever thinking less of an LGBTQ person, I wish I knew how wrong and hurtful this could be.
I personally improved both academically and socially. I found new and improved ways of learning compared to what I was used to in Cambodia. For instance, learning is not one-directional where teachers just feed learning materials to students every day but it is two-directional where students’ inputs, responses, and discussion are as important in the process of learning. I had learned the importance of researching and referencing reliable sources and evidence in any statements for both academic essays and interpersonal discussions.
- After UWC:
I learned quite early how unique and valuable my UWC experience is in real life experience. For instance, I personally felt that I had become a world citizen in the way that I am more open-minded and familiar with different cultures and people around the world. I was ready and confident with my ability to get along and collaboratively with people from around the world.
I found that I feel proud with my UWC experience and more often than not that I had shared my story and experience at UWC with many new people and I believed I had inspired some of them to seek similar experience by applying to UWC.
I felt the responsibility as a world citizen to fight for the weak and the vulnerable not only in my community and country but anywhere in the world. I found myself caring more and becoming more proactive about global issues around the world that I never thought I would understand and knew I could do anything about it.

UWC Mission and Values: “makes education a force to unite people, nations, and cultures for peace and a sustainable future”. Going to the UWC is not only for education but also for learning to live and create peace with people from different cultures and backgrounds through sharing one's own cultures and experiences.
World-Class Education: The schools provide an International Baccalaureate (IB) program that is accepted/preferred by many colleges/universities around the world. The program provides a good foundation for colleges/universities in both academic and extracurricular.
Merit-Based scholarships and its rigorous/fair selection process: The process of selecting students for the UWC Scholarships are designed to be fair and entirely based on individual true merit but not wealth or connection. There are multiple rounds of the selection process that will provide opportunities for candidates to learn more about the UWC scholarships and as well as provide opportunities for the committees to carefully examine the qualities of the candidates to ensure the fairness and credibility of the selection process.

The UWC experience was amazing! It was an experience that taught me to be independent. I also learned about others and their cultures because I got to make friends from all over the world. I wrote this quote in my yearbook when I graduated from UWCAC “two years worth of great memories” and I can’t believe that it has been ten years because it still feels like yesterday. I wish I could turn back time to experience those two years again!

ដូចសិស្សដទៃទៀតដែរ ខ្ញុំបានព្យាយាមផ្តោតទៅលើការសិក្សា និងប្រលងជាប់ IB Diploma ព្រោះវាជាឱកាសកំរមួយក្នុងជីវិត។ តាមរយៈការសិក្សានៅទីនោះ ខ្ញុំបានយល់ដឹងថាខ្ញុំពូកែមុខវិជ្ជាណា និងមិនសូវពូកែមុខវិជ្ជាណា ហើយនេះជាកត្តាសំខាន់នៅពេលនោះ ព្រោះខ្ញុំកំពុងព្យាយាមស្វែងយល់ថាខ្ញុំចង់សិក្សាមុខវិជ្ជាណាមួយនៅសាកលវិទ្យាល័យ។ មុខវិជ្ជានិងចំណាត់ថ្នាក់ល្អគឺជាអ្វីគ្រប់យ៉ាងសំរាប់ខ្ញុំនៅពេលនោះ។ UWCAC គឺជាសាលាអន្តរជាតិ ហើយអ្នកត្រូវបង្កើតមិត្តមិនថាអ្នកនៅទីណាក៏ដោយ ជាពិសេសនៅសាលាអន្តរជាតិ។ ខ្ញុំបានរៀនថាខ្ញុំអាចចេញទៅនិយាយជាមួយសិស្សៗដទៃ និងរៀនអំពីប្រទេស និងវប្បធម៌របស់ពួកគេ។ ដំបូងខ្ញុំគិតថាខ្ញុំស្គាល់ពិភពលោកហើយ ប៉ុន្តែទាល់តែពេលខ្ញុំបានទៅ UWC ទើបខ្ញុំដឹងថាពិភពលោកមានភាពចំរុះយ៉ាងដូចម្តេច។ មានពេលមួយខ្ញុំអង្គុយក្នុងអាហារដ្ឋានជាមួយមិត្តរបស់ខ្ញុំមកពីអ៊ុយរូហ្គាយ ហើយគាត់បាននិយាយថាគាត់ប្រាថ្នាចង់ទៅលេងអឺរ៉ុប។ ការឆ្លើយតបរបស់ខ្ញុំចំពោះគាត់គឺ "អ៊ុយរូហ្គាយមិនមែននៅអឺរ៉ុបទេ?" ហើយនោះគឺជាពេលដែលគាត់ចាប់ផ្តើមបង្ហាញខ្ញុំនូវផែនទីពិភពលោក។
មានរឿងជាច្រើនដែលខ្ញុំបានរៀនបន្ទាប់ពី UWC។ ខ្ញុំបានទៅសហរដ្ឋអាមេរិក រដ្ឋ North Carolina ដើម្បីរៀននៅសកលវិទ្យាល័យ ធ្វើកម្មសិក្សានៅ United Nations Foundation បន្ទាប់ពីខ្ញុំរៀនចប់ ការងារបណ្តោះអាសន្ននៅ American Civil Liberties Unions បន្ទាប់ពីកម្មសិក្សា ហើយបានត្រឡប់មកកម្ពុជាវិញដើម្បីស្វែងរកការងារធ្វើ។ អ្វីដែលខ្ញុំបានយកពីបទពិសោធន៍របស់ UWC សម្រាប់ដំណាក់កាលផ្សេងៗគ្នាក្នុងជីវិតគឺភាពអត់ធ្មត់ ហើយកុំខ្លាចក្នុងការផ្ញើសារទៅកាន់មិត្តភ័ក្តិរបស់អ្នក ប្រសិនបើអ្នកត្រូវការកន្លែងសម្រាប់គេងមួយឬពីរយប់។
If you ask me ten years ago, my answer would be different from now. I will answer in two parts, the during and after UWC since I graduated from UWC 10 years ago.
Like many other students, I tried to focus on studies and passing the IB Diploma as it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity given. Through studying, I learned what subjects I was good at and what subjects I was not, which was important at the time as I was trying to figure out what I wanted to study at the university. Subjects and good grades were everything. UWCAC is a boarding school and you need to make friends no matter where you are; especially, at boarding school. I learned that I could go out there and talk to people and learn about other people’s countries and cultures. I thought I knew the world, but I did not until I went to UWC. One time I sat in the cafeteria with my friend from Uruguay and he said that he wished that he could go visit Europe. My response to him was “isn’t Uruguay in Europe?” and that is when he started showing me the world map.
There are many things that I learned after UWC. I went to the United States, North Carolina for university, interned at the United Nations Foundation after I graduated, a temporary job at American Civil Liberties Unions after the internship, and returned to Cambodia to find a job. What I took from the UWC experience for these different stages in life is resilience and don’t be afraid to message your friends if you need a place to sleep for a night or two.

UWC គឺជាបទពិសោធន៍អប់រំដែលផ្លាស់ប្តូរពេញមួយជីវិត។ ខ្ញុំមកពីមណ្ឌលកុមារកំព្រាក្នុងប្រទេសកម្ពុជា ហើយខ្ញុំនឹងមិនមានឱកាសស្វែងយល់ពីពិភពលោកទេ ប្រសិនបើវាមិនមែនដោយសារឱកាសអាហារូបករណ៍ UWC។ អាហារូបករណ៍ UWC បានត្រួសត្រាយផ្លូវសម្រាប់ខ្ញុំក្នុងការបន្តការសិក្សារបស់ខ្ញុំ និងកសាងជីវិតរបស់ខ្ញុំ។ . ខ្ញុំបានរៀនជំនាញសង្គម និងជំនាញជីវិតជាច្រើនជាទូទៅ ព្រោះUWCជាសាលាអន្តរជាតិ។ . អ្នកត្រូវតែនៅសាលាUWCs មួយដើម្បីទទួលបានបទពិសោធន៍នៃការអប់រំល្អដែលអ្នកនឹងមិនអាចបំភ្លេចបាន។
UWC is a life-time changing educational experience. I came from an orphanage in Cambodia, and I would not have had the chance to explore the world if it were not for the UWC scholarship. The UWC scholarship has paved a way for me to continue my study and build my life. I have learned a lot of social skills and life skills in general, as the school was a boarding school. You have to be at one of the UWCs to experience the most incredible education that you will not forget.

UWC has led me on a journey of self-discovery and self-development. The supports from the community has expanded my horizons in embracing challenges, and the experience was eye-opening. It has opened me up to new perspectives and valuable insights. The diverse cultures within the campus have also moulded me into a much bigger society. I’ve become more connected to the world, and the world has become less strange to me.

It was an amazing journey that was full of joy, struggle, friendship, and memories. It is one that is impossible to replicate yet you keep wanting to go back in time to just live in those moments a bit longer.

It is not hyperbole and it is not over-dramatization to say that my time at UWC was the defining period of my life. I used to think I was good enough and smart enough until I stepped foot into the school and classrooms to realize that there was a much bigger world out there to learn about than I ever thought. I am still amazed how the 2 years of education at UWC have changed my life and continued to shape me to be who I am today- one of service, value, dignity, inspiration, and self-belief.

There is never a doubt in my mind that every young Cambodians who are eligible to apply for this amazing opportunity should apply. The competition might be stiff but if succeed, it is worth every ounce of sweat and tear and hard work that you put in. It was a dream and still a dream to be able to go to a school with an education that is unmatched and with the impact that is immeasurable.
